Some promotions begin long before the title changes.
When Destiny Terry joined Hana in 2022, she came aboard as a lieutenant and watch commander at IRS Headquarters. Before long, she was volunteering for responsibilities beyond her role, including taking over the site schedule, a job few people were eager to own.
Managing the schedule meant more than filling shifts. It required getting to know the officers, understanding what was happening in their lives, and finding ways to keep the mission covered while supporting the people doing the work.
For Ron Best, Hana’s Regional Director for the National Capital Region, that initiative stood out. “She showed us, ‘I can do more. Let me have this,’” Ron recalled. “This was her asking me, not me asking her.”
Destiny continued looking for ways to grow, and eventually she earned a captain role at IRS Headquarters.
She barely had time to settle into the role.
Within days, Hana asked her to step in as acting Contract Manager. Her time as captain was so brief that Ron remembers it this way: “She never spent a day in uniform because she was acting contract manager on day one,” Ron said.
The move was fast, but it wasn’t a surprise. Destiny already knew the site, knew the officers, and had spent years proving she was ready for more.
The transition, Ron says, was remarkably smooth. “She already knew the people, so that was half the battle,” Ron said. “It was pretty seamless.”
Today, Destiny serves as Contract Manager at IRS Headquarters, overseeing a site with approximately 70 Hana employees.
Her responsiveness is hard to miss. Ron says he can mention something that needs to be done and, before the conversation is even over, hear his email alert announcing that Destiny has already handled it. “She’s on it,” he said.
The strongest evidence of Destiny’s leadership may be the response from the people she leads. Ron described how happy the officers were when they learned she would officially become their Contract Manager, a reflection of the trust she had built long before the promotion became official.
Destiny’s path is a reminder that leadership isn’t something you wait for. You step up, take on more, and show you’re ready for what’s next.
Destiny did exactly that.
Congratulations, Destiny, on a well-earned promotion.
